The Letter “O”Teaching Design

The purpose is to learn the letter O’s Letter Name and Letter Sound,develop the ability of reading new words,make the kids love reading through picture books.
Step 1. Warming-up and Lead-in.
Warming-up : (Greetings between T and Ss.) T:Class begins! Ss: Stand up, please!
T: Good morning, boys and girls! Ss: Good morning, Miss Lan!
T: Before our class, let’s sing a song, OK? Ss: OK!
(Sing the Phonics Song and do the actions.) T: Wonderful! Sit down,please. Ss: Thank you,Miss Lan! Lead-in:
Ss have learned how to read the 26 letters,and practised “A,E,I”last two classes, so we are going to use phonics of /o/ to learn hop,top,cot,stop,plop and flop, then read a story《FOX HOPS》.
T:Now please look at the blackboard,what’s this? (Point to the apple.) Ss: It’s an apple!
T: Yes, it’s an apple. Can you chant it? Ss:A is for apple, a a apple.
T:Yes, very good. And what’s this? Ss:It’s an elephant...
...(Use the same way to review more letter sound.)
T:As we know, there are five very important letters, what are they? Ss: A, E, I, O, U.
T: Yes, the letter names are “a[ei]、e[i:]、i[ai]、o[əu]、u[ju:]”. And letter sound: [æ] [e] [i] [ɔ] [ʌ]. Step 2. Presentation
T:Today we are going to learn the letter “O”, Phonics “O”. I’ll divide you into 3 groups. This is Group 1,Group 2 and the rest of you are Group 3. There are 3 cartoon foxes for each group. If you have good behavior, you can go one step until to the top.At last,the winner group can receive a surprise.OK? Ss:OK!
T: The game begins! The first competition:Can you read? Ss:dog, sob, log, hot, got, fog, lost, off.
T:Can you find something in common about them?
Ss:O.
T:Yes,they all have the letter O! Now let’s learn some new words.

Practice the new words several times and put up the word-cards on the blackboard.
Step 4. Consolidation
T: Aloha,a little boy,only 6 years old, will tell us a story about a naughty fox.Do you wanna know it? Ss:Yes!
(Play the video of Aloha.)
T:Now I’m reading.Look at the cover page carefully,what can you see? Ss:A fox!
T:What colour is the fox? Ss:It’s red.
T:What does he do? Ss:Hops!
T:Excellent! And what’s the name of this book? Ss:Fox Hops. T: Who write it? Ss:Nora Gaydos.
T:Now open the book,work in groups, try to read the story.(5 minutes.)
A fox. A fox hops. A fox hops on top. A fox hops on top of a cot. A fox hops and hops. STOP,FOX,STOP! A cot plops! A fox flops! Plops and flops!
A fox is not on top of the cot.
T:OK! Stop! Time is up. Let’s,read the story together. (Fill the blanks with the correct words.) T: Wonderful!You’ve done a good job.
T:I’ll introduce another girl to you,she will read the story,listen! Ss:(Listen the story again.)
T:It’s show time! Who wants to try?Let’s enjoy! Ss:(Show and enjoy.)
Step 5. Summary & homework.
Read the story together and tell it to others after class. T:Class is over! Ss:Stand up,please! T:Bye, everyone! Ss:Bye, Miss Lan.
