2. Students can use reading strategies to help read faster and understand better.

Purpose
Step 1
Lead-in
1. Have the students watch a video about reading and ask questions.
2. Talk about the two main problems that students have in their reading.
3. Have the students listen to good reading
strategies to help solve their problems by watching the reading star’s interview and listening to his advice.
To lead in the topic and list three useful reading strategies on the blackboard for farther
learning.
Step 2
Challenge 1 -- Guess the meaning from the context.
1. Have students try guessing the meaning of 6 expressions according to the context. ① I lost my iPhone. I feel blue.
② English is a piece of cake for me. ③ Are you available tomorrow? ④ It’s a waste of time.
⑤ Daniel is the apple of his father’s eye. ⑥ Boys and girls, please be all ears.
To help students learn how to guess the meaning according
to the contest.
2. Help students get better understandings of these new expressions by try using them in conversations with students.
Step 3
Challenge 2 -- Read pictures or titles to predict. 1. Have students predict the topic of the passage according to the titles or pictures.
2. Help students learn about the usual way to get the main idea of a passage quickly by trying on different passages.
① First sentences often tell the main idea. ② Last sentences often tell the main idea. ③ Repeated words often tell the main idea. To master the predicting skill according to the titles or pictures.
To generalize the quick ways to get the main idea of a passage.
Step 4
Challenge 3 -- Scan for information. 1. Try scanning for information in an invitation, lost and found notices and a movie ad.
2. Try guessing the meanings from the context.
To master the scanning skill in reading.
To stimulate students to be curious about the story book Peter Rabbit and arouse their interest in reading it.
Step 5
Challenge 4 -- Overall Application
1. Read a story quickly and find the information with the help of the reading strategies learnt today.
2. Pay attention to the feelings of the father and brainstorm why the son needs so much money. 3. Make an ending for the story with group members.
4. Read the original ending of the story aloud. 5. Books recommended:
