Overall design & Guiding principle:
This is a READING lesson which aims to improve students’ ability in skimming and scanning. Therefore, grammar will not be a key point in this lesson. Meanwhile, students are expected to have basic knowledge about Australia, and have the ability to organise a week tour to Australia after this lesson. In addition, students are required to have deep thinking and learn to be critical learners. Task-based teaching and Lecture-based learning are used as the two main methods to teach and learn.
Analysis of reading material:
This passage introduces Australia to students from several aspects. In this lesson, students need to do both extensive and intensive reading, and grasp the key information to do the exercises below the passage and prepare for their own after-class task.
Analysis of students:
The objects of this lesson are students in Senior Grade 2. Most of them are in a middle level of English learning. Although most of them have a good command of vocabulary, but they lack of the ability to conclude the key information with their own words. Besides, most students lack the ability of critical thinking and systematic autonomous language learning. Thus, it requires teachers to push and give students a well-rounded schema building. More importantly, it is difficult for students to focus on the class for 45 minutes, so teacher should design some relaxing but educational activities or discussion to sustain students’ attention.
Teaching Goals:
Aims of knowledge: master and use some important words, such as citizenship, tolerance, tropical and so on.
Aims of ability: improve ability both in extensive and intensive reading; improve ability in information summarising by using their own words.
Aims of emotion: inspire students’ yearn for understanding and exploring western countries, with travelling and even having further education abroad in the future.
Aims of strategy: master some methods of independent study; be
well versed in transforming input to output.
Key points & Difficult points:
1. Key points: master the usage of key words; summarise the useful and key information from the passage.
2. Difficult points: read the whole passage within limited time; summarise useful message and be able to present them in their own words; students may talk with others in Chinese rather than do activities when they have group discussion.
Solutions:
1. Ask students read the passage before the lesson to have a general idea of what it is about;
2. Teach students some skills in summarising by setting examples before they conclude by themselves.
3. Get close to students when they have discussion, and encourage them use English rather than Chinese.
