Using Language--Coping with disaster!
By Sophia
I. Teaching Objectives
At the end of this class, the students will be able to
1) get to know the main idea and the structure of the text by skimming and scanning 2) figure out the meaning of the new words "withdraw" and "alternative" in context
3) use the words in the text skillfully in their own compositions as well as their oral presentations 4) think critically, looking at things from different perspectives II. Teaching Procedures Step1. Reading
i. Pre-reading Discussion
Greet the students and divide them into different groups. Ask the students to discuss the following questions in groups:
1. Are you content with your life at the moment? Why or why not? 2. What is your most serious worry as a student?
3. What do you do to relax when you are under pressure? 4. What are your parents’ hopes for you? 5. What are your own hopes? Purposes:
To activate the students' knowledge schema, help the students focus on their real life problems, and lay a foundation for their understanding of the text, where a high school boy has similar problems. ii. Skimming
Ask the students to skim the text to find out the main idea of the passage as well as the structure of the text. Induce the students to pay attention to the third person used in the text. Purposes:
To help the students understand the main idea, the structure of the text as well as the feature of a narrative. iii. Scanning
Instruct the students to scan the first paragraph about Liu Xiaoming's situation. Ask the students to read the summary while filling in the blanks. Purposes:
To help the students know more about the details of Liu Xiaoming's situation; to familiarize the students with the new words in the text. iv. Word Study
Ask the students to figure out the meaning of the words "withdraw" and "alternative" in context, and enable them to use the words in new contexts, using different activities to engage the students. Purposes:
To help the students understand the new words; to create chances for them to practice. Step 2. Writing and Speaking
Instruct the students to make up a story in groups, using the words from the text (show them on the screen) in their story, the more, the better. They can first discuss and contribute ideas, and then one group member writes the story down on a piece of paper. Afterwards, invite some groups to present their story in the front, while another student counts the number of new words used in their story. Purposes:
To help the students use the words they have learned both in spoken and written forms. The given beginning of the story creates a situation where someone faces a problem and needs to cope with it, thus helping the students think critically.
Step 3. Critical Thinking
Summarize the gist of the text and induce the students to think about the problem critically. Guide the students to the understanding that we should look at things from different perspectives. Share with the students some idioms with wisdom. Purposes:
To inspire the students' critical thinking. Step 4. Homework
Write a letter to Liu Xiaoming and give some advice on how to cope with his situation. Purposes:
Consolidate what the students have learned in class and deepen their understanding of the topic of the unit.
