Objectives:
After the class, the students are expected to:
1. understand the structure of the story and some key information by using the skills of skimming, scanning detailed
reading, etc.;
2. know the real meaning of the title.
Learning importance:
Understanding the story and developing the reading ability by finding the key information.
Learning difficulties:
Defining the word “alien” and understanding the real meaning of this word.

Stage 1
Pre-reading Stage (Input)
1. Check the answers to the self-study sheet 1. Examine the students’ answers through their self-study sheets. Make sure that students can read the new words and understand
their meanings. 2. Look at some pictures and guess what they are. 2. Show some pictures and ask “what are they?” Lead out the words “alien”.
3. Brainstorm and imagine what the aliens look like. 3. Ask the students to brainstorm the appearance of the alien.
Warm up the class and cause students’ interest to the aliens.
Stage 2
While-reading Stage (Input)
1. Answer 3W questions by reading the article. 1. Ask the students to get the information about “WHO”, “WHERE” and “HOW”. Require the students to get the basic information and the
structure of a story. 1. Skim SCENE I and do the jigsaw in groups. Find a key word to conclude SCENE I. 2.Give the students the wrong orders and ask WHY . Guide the students to pay
attention to the PRONOUN and to summarize. 3. . Scan Scene II and underline some details. 3. Remind the students to find some details according to some VERBS. Promote the ability of detailed reading.
4. Retell the process of Tina’s exploration by using the detailed information.
4. Ask a student to retell the process without some information. Check the understanding of
Scene II and develop the retelling ability.

5. Read SCENE III and answer some questions. 5. Let the students find out that some clues to prove that their father believed them. Train the students to read between lines.
Stage 3 Post-reading Stage (Output)
1. Find something strange from Tina’s eyes and readers’ eyes 1. Get the students to think about something from different views. Teach the students to look at something from two sides.
2. Analyze the real meaning of the title. 2. Let the students know the real meaning of the title. Arouse the students’ critical thinking. 3. Discuss the reference of the word “ALIEN” in groups. 3. Present an example sentence to get more students involved in discussing
