Unit 2 Book 3  Reading and Thinking Mother of Ten Thousand Babies.
Teaching plan
My teaching is designed to help the students to find out the structure of the passage, learn about Dr.Lin Qiaozhi’s devotion and the great contributions she made to the society by leading the students to find out the three hard choices she made in her lifetime. Most importantly, the students are supposed to think about the morals and virtues of Dr. Lin Qiaozhi by analyzing the facts and details of making choices. Therefore, the reading procedure is shown as follows:
I. Lead in
The teacher asks students a question to arouse students’ interest: Suppose you are taking an important exam, suddenly a girl who is also taking the exam fainted in the exam room. Which do you choose? To continue your exam or to rescue the fainted girl? And why?
The teacher talks about the two choices with students.
The teacher tells students a true story: In the summer of 1921, a young lady was taking an entrance examination to Peking Union Medical College. Suddenly, a girl who was also taking the exam fainted. The young lady was faced with two choices: To continue the exam or to give up the exam to rescue the girl. Without hesitation, she chose to give up the examination to rescue the girl. Fortunately, she was admitted to the college because of her excellent performance of love and unselfisness in face of this emergency.
The teacher introduces the topic of the passage by saying “Actually, the young lady is Doctor Lin Qiaozhi. The teacher tells the students that they are going to learn more stories about Dr. Lin and see more hard choices she made in her lifetime.
II. Reading
Activity 1: Find out the main idea.
Ask the students to scan the passage to get the main idea of the whole passage. (2 minutes)
This passsage is about Dr.Lin’s devotion to patients and her great contributions to the society.
Introduce the main line of the article by saying “In the process of her devoting to patients and contributing to the society, She made some life choices.”
Activity 2: Find out the three choices.
Ask the students to skim the passage and try to find the choices Dr Lin was faced with through her life. (2 minutes) Three choices:

  1. Whether to get married and have a family, or to pursue her medical dream.
  2. Whether to stay in a foreign country, or to return to her motherland.
  3. Whether to establish her own small family, or to work for China's countless families.
Activity 3: Find the structure of the passage.
Ask students to divide paragraph 2-6 into 3 parts according to the choices.
  1. Whether to get married and have a family, or to pursue her medical dream. (paragraph 2)
  2. Whether to stay in a foreign country, or to return to her motherland.(paragraph 3-5)
  3. Whether to establish her own small family, or to work for China's countlessfamilies.(paragraph 6)
What about Paragraph 1? What’s the function of the first paragraph?
It’s the introduction of the whole passage.

Activity 4: Find out the morals and virtues of Lin Qiaozhi.
Analyse the three chioces one by one to have a deep understanding of the whole passage. Then lead the students to find the morals and virtues of Lin Qiaozhi.
The first choice
Read paragraph 2 and answer the 3 questions. (1 minute)
  1. What was the difficulty when she was 18 years old?
The girls were expected to get married instead of receiving much education.
  1. What made her make the choice?
Her dream to study medicine.
  1. What was the result of the choice ?
She pursued her dream to study medicine despite her brother's complaint. Ask students to find the morals and virtues of Lin Qiaozhi by summarizing her personality according to the facts and details they find when answering the questions.
We can learn that Dr. Lin is a determined person.
The second choice
Ask students to read paragraph 3-5 and answer the 2 questions. (1 minute)
  1. What made her make the choice to return to her motherland? (Why did she reject the offer?)
Because she wanted to serve the women and children at home.
  1. What's the result of her choice?
Chinese patients especially poor patients benefited a lot from her.
Ask students to find the morals and virtues of Lin Qiaozhi by summarizing her personality according to the facts and details they find when answering the questions.
We can learn that she is patriotic, generous and selfless.
The third choice
Now I’d like you to read paragraph 6 and answer the 2 questions. 1 minute for you.
  1. What made her choose to work for China's countless families.
She intended to devote herself to serving and treating patients.
  1. What's the result of her choice?
She stayed single all her life and had no children of her own, but she delivered 50,000 babies.
Although she had no children of her own, she delivered so many babies and helped so many women in need.
Ask students to find the morals and virtues of Lin Qiaozhi by summarizing her personality according to the facts and details they find when answering the questions.
We can learn that she is responsible and selfless.
Activity 5:  Draw conclusions---morals and virtues

As you read, pay attention to facts and details mentioned by the author, and put them together to draw conclusions about the topic. 
Ask the students to look at the last sentence of the first paragraph :
These words of Dr. Lin Qiaozhi gave us a look into the heart of this amazing woman, and what carried her through a life of hard choices. (Para 1)
According to the facts and details we have talked about, what conclusion can you draw?
What does “what “ refer to ?
Teacher summarizes students’ ideas: What refers to Dr. Lin’s Morals and Virtues. That is: Pursuit of her dream, the spirit of sacrificing herself, and putting the needs of others first.

III. Post-reading activity-----role play

The host, Mr. Yang Rui is hosting a TV program called Dialogue. He invited some people to the studio to talk about Dr. Lin Qiaozhi from their perspectives. 
Roles                                             Tasks
Student A: Mr. Yang, the        Host the talk show host
Student B: a friend                    Talk about her early experiences
Student C: a classmate            Talk about her college life
Student D: a colleague              Talk about her work as a physician
Student E: a patient                   Talk about the experience of being helped by
Dr. Lin
Student F: a young Talk about how he benefited from the fund doctor
Ask students to work in groups of six to do the role play. Try to use the information in the passage.
Give students 5 minutes to prepare for the show. Then ask some groups to come to the front to present their show. After the show, the teacher asks some students to comment the perfomance according to this evaluation standard.
Evaluation standard:
  1. content of the dialogue
  2. pronunciation and intonation
  3. team work
  4. body language
  5. fluency
Summary:
Summarize the comments on the students’s performance and express gratitude to their efforts. From their show, we have learnt more about Dr. Lin Qiaozhi. She is well worth our admiration. In fact, around us, there are many people like Lin Qiaozhi. They come from all walks of life, including doctors, delivery persons, policemen, teachers, and so on. They choose to give up their own interests and sacrifice themselves to others when they are needed by the people and our country. Because of them, we can have a better life.

IV. Assignment
Ask students to choose one of the them.
  1. Write a hard choice that you were faced with . Why did you make thatchoice and what was the result.
  2. Write an introduction to an admirable person who sacrificed his/her owninterests for the sake of others.
