Teaching objectives:
After learning the text, the students should be able: (1) to learn about the stages used in scientific research
(2) todevelop the students’ reading skills, learn to use some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning.
(3) toencourage students invent some inventions
Teaching key point:teach students how to the students how to get the main idea and analyze the difficult sentences of the text
Teaching difficult point:students are expected to invent some inventions.
Teaching aids: PPT, blackboard
Teaching allotments: 40 minutes
Teaching Procedures: Step I: Lead-in (5minutes)
1. Guess what the invention is or who the inventor is.
A.It’s made of plastics and metal.It looks like a small box with a screen and buttons on it.With the invention you can contact someone while you are walking.
B.The inventor is from America. He is one of the fathers of inventions.The inventor invented the bulb.
C.This invention looks like a bird.It’s made of metal.It makes it possible for people to fly to different places in the world. It is powered by an engine and is flown by a pilot. D.This invention can help people in the street.It looks like a tree standing beside the street. It directs cars and trucks. It uses colored lights. Red means stopping, green means going.
Step II: Pre-reading(10minutes)
1.Answer the question: whether a discovery equals an invention. 2. Show some pictures about some famous persons.
3.The suitable order of the steps every inventor must go through before they can have their inventions approved: 1. Finding a problem 2. Doing research 3. Thinking of a creative solution 4. Testing the solution
5. Applying for a patent 6. Deciding on the invention
Step III: While-reading(20minutes) 1. Fast-reading
What does the writer mainly tell us about? A. Introduces what the problem of snakes is B. Tells us how to get patents
C. Introduces what the problem of snake is and her mother wants her to catch them. D. Introduces her idea of trapping the snakes and her application for a patent
2. Scanning paragraph stages 1 Find a problem 2 Do research
3 Think of a creative solutions 4.5.6 Test the solution several times 7 Apply for a patent
Step IV: Post-reading(5minutes)
Discussion: what’s your design that you want to invent? List three aspects:name, why and function.
Step V: Assignment (2minutes)
Read the text again and find out some difficult sentences.
