Book 4 unit 3 A taste of humor
(Period I Warming up)

The teaching design thought:
Generally, based on the new curriculum standard, this teaching method combines tasked-based teaching method and situational teaching method to make students master of the class. Different from the traditional teaching method, this design use different kinds of activities to arouse Ss’ interest to join the class, practicing their abilities of speaking, listening, discussing and writing. It enables students to learn about the different types of humor and taste the difference between English humor and Chinese humor.
I. Analysis of the teaching materials:
The main topic of this unit is English humor. It introduces different types of humor and great humorists in the world such as Charlie Chaplin and Mr. Bean. This period focuses on warming up, in which students will taste varieties of humor and talk about the great impact humor has on their lives, meanwhile, practicing their speaking, writing and collecting more information to prepare for the reading.
II. Three dimensional targets
Knowledge aims:
1. Help Ss to learn how to talk about some types of English and Chinese humor and then tell the difference.
2. Find out the punchlines in the jokes provided.
3. Learn the characteristics of the little tramp played by Charlie Chaplin to prepare for reading.
Ability aims:
Improve the ability of speaking, discussing, writing and co-operating.
Emotional aims:
1. Ss will be able to develop a positive attitude in their lives and cultivate a good sense of humor.
2. Learn to use humor to overcome some difficulties.
III. Important points:
1. Talk about some types of English and Chinese humor and then tell the difference.
2.Know the importance of humor and learn about an international charming character played by Charlie Chaplin.
IV.Difficult point:
Cultivate students’ ability to express themselves in English and improve their listening, speaking and writing.
Teaching procedure
Step I lead-in (3′)
The teacher tells a funny joke in an interesting way which is sure to make Ss laugh. Lead Ss to find out which word makes them laugh and then introduce the key word “punchline”.
Design purpose: Make Ss happy to adapt to the topic of this unit through the funny joke and learn the function of punchline to lay the foundation for next step.
Step II Role-playing reading( 5′)
The teacher will read the jokes given on the book and ask Ss to find out the punchline. Then ask several students to read the other jokes by role playing and find out the punchline. For example:
1. Customer: What’s that fly(苍蝇) doing in my soup?
Waiter: Swimming, I think!
2. Policeman: You can’t park here.
Driver: Why can’t I ?
Policeman: Read the sigh there.
Driver: It says, “Fine for Parking,” so I parked.
3. Girl : If we marry, will you give me a ring ?
Boy: Of course, What’s your telephone number?
Design purpose: learn the most common type of humor—jokes and learn to grasp the laughing point to taste the difference between Chinese and English humor.
Step III Guessing (8′)
Guess the type of humor according to the pictures or videos to classify them into
verbal and nonverbal group and try to list the typical masters of them.
