Write a Formal Letter of Invitation

1. Send students a letter of invitation through Happy Class(智慧课堂系统)to ipads before the class, and ask students to finish the following 2 tasks:
1). analyse the structure of the letter and summarize the main idea of each part 2). Underline the sentences and phrases that can be used in other invitation letters 2. Check the online homework to know the preview result
Step 2 Lead-in
Show students some pictures of The Singing Contest held two weeks ago to guide them to talk about the details and lead in the writing assignment---a letter to invite Henry to The Sing Contest.
Step 3 Learn and practise Activity 1
Ask one student to analyze the structure of the example letter of invitation and try to summarize the main idea of each part .

Activity 2
1. Ask one student to underline the good expressions in Part 1, then lead students to think more expressions usually used in Part 1.
2. Summarize students’ ideas and show them some typical sentence patterns usually used in Part 1 of an invitation letter.

It's my honor/pleasure to invite you to...... I sincerely hope that you can take part in.... I wonder if you can come to...

3. Practise using the patterns. Ask students to translate the given sentences to imitate writing the first part of the invitation letter with the help of the sentence patterns above. Send the exercise to students’ ipads and ask them to upload their writings within 4 minutes.
4. Collect students’ writings online, choose 2-4 pieces of works to check together, and ask other students to make comments or correct mistakes. Activity 3

2. Practise using the above patterns. Come back to the writing assignment, and ask students to work in groups to translate the body of the invitation letter. Each group submit one piece of writing within 8 minutes.
3. Show 1-3 pieces of writing, and choose students from other groups to make comments on the stage. Activity 4
1. Show students Part 3 of the example letter, and lead them to think more frequently used expressions in the ending of an invitation letter. Show some English sentences and ask students to translate them into Chinese, then students orally present an ending.

Step 4 Summary
After the above tasks, lead the class to summarize “how to write a good letter of invitation”. Then stress the formal language to them as well as the other standards of a good essay.
Step 5 Homework
Ask students to rewrite a complete letter on their own and polish the language to the best.
