Analysis of the teaching material The text is a story about Tina and Tom, citizens from the planet Bird World, discovering
astronauts from Earth and their crashed spaceship. In the story, “aliens” are no longer some unknown beings from the universe but humans instead. Studying the text offers a great chance
for students to think about the possible relationship between humans and aliens.
Analysis of the students
Most students in Class 6 are interested in the topic because they are great fans of Star Wars and Avengers. However, they may have never seriously considered the human-alien relationship, although they can be creative sometimes. When it comes to reading, most students need more time than expected before they completely grasp the main idea and successfully infer the hidden meanings. They enjoy working in groups yet prefer to use Chinese in discussion.
Teaching objectives
At the end of the lesson, students are able to 1. Language capabilities
(1) Understand the gist and the true identities of the characters by finding out key words; (2) Modify the text based on proper understanding. 2. Learning capabilities
(1) Use a mindmap to organize their ideas; (2) Work out problems in groups. 3. Thinking qualities
(1) Develop critical thinking skills by presenting and discussing opposite statements; (2) Use pictures and open-ending questions to stimulate creativity and imagination. 4. Culture awareness

Ask Ss to brainstorm ideas based on the word “unknown”. Show Ss a video about aliens. Expand the vocabulary
about the topic. Arouse Ss’ interests.

Ask them whether aliens are friends or a danger. Pave way for after-reading
activity. 2. Pre-reading
Ask Ss what they can see in the pictures and write
down their prediction on the handout.
Encourage Ss to make
good use of different kinds of information and their imagination. 3. While-reading
(1) Read for gist
Ask Ss to read the passage and find out whether their
prediction agrees with the text. Ask Ss to summarize the gist. (2) Read for key details
Ask Ss to answer questions of D2 on the text book and
work in pairs to find evidence.
Show Ss two wrong pictures about astronauts and their
spaceship. Ask them in groups of 6 to point out all the mistakes and correct them. Ask 2 groups to show their works and check the answers. Respond to Ss’ prediction. Help Ss to understand the
main idea of the text. Encourage Ss to read
between the lines and select information when required.

4. Post-reading
Ask Ss to hold a negotiation between Bird World and
the Earth.
Ask Ss to work in groups of 6. Three of them represent
Bird World, and the other three represent the astronauts from the Earth.
Ask Ss to figure out the contents of their negotiation,
such as purpose and potential results.
Ask Ss to practise using the language pattern to
negotiate with each other.
Ask 2-3 groups to demonstrate their work. Echo to warming-up
