Dragon brings start of spring
Many of you might buy new clothes and backpacks for the new school year. But why didn’t you get a haircut? It may have something to do with the Dragon Heads-raising Day (Longtaitou).
Dragon Heads-raising Day is a Chinese festival. It is on the second day of the second lunar (阴历的) month. This year, it falls on Mar 18th. It came from a myth (神话). After the day, the Dragon King will wake up from his winter sleep and bring more rain. So that day is the start of spring and farming.
People believe that a haircut during the first lunar month is not a good idea. It may bring bad things to your uncles. So people can only cut it on or after Dragon Heads-raising Day. Although it’s not true, many people still do it.
There are also other ways to celebrate this festival. For example, people eat food with dragon names. People call noodles dragon’s beard (longxu). Dumplings are dragon’s ears (long’er) and spring rolls are dragon’s scales (longlin).
People also do dragon dances and make dragon lanterns. The lanterns stand for people’s best wishes and good luck.

An amazing journey to Africa
the last National Day holiday I went to Kenya, Africa. I was amazed its great views of grassland and animals. To really enjoy the view, I chose to have a hot-air balloon trip. As the balloon flew higher, the fire our head became bigger. Seen the Masai Mara Grassland, the grass was not even green, but some kind of yellow. There was a long river lying the grass just a ribbon (飘带). Groups of wildebeests (牛羚) and zebras were crossing the river. Some were running, and some were drinking water or just enjoying the sunshine. It was so peaceful!
Beyond that were several trees green leaves. I noticed a leopard (美洲豹) lying a tree, and there was a half-eaten wildebeest hanging right a branch(树干) its shoulder. I was surprised, or should I say scared, because it was my first time to see a real leopard and its bloody lunch. What
impressed me most was that the leopard didn’t move at all. It sat still a sculpture (塑像).
This experience made me start thinking. Animals live their leisurely (悠闲的) life the grassland. They are the real owners of this land, while human beings are their guests. This is their home, not ours. Humans should respect and protect this land, not destroy (破坏) it. I believe the harmony (和谐) human beings and animals can last forever when we realize this.
