Section B Reading 2a-2e
Ⅰ.The analysis of the teaching material and students ◆The analysis of the teaching material
The lesson comes from PEP Go for it ,Book 3,Unit 2, Section B, from 2a to 2e.the topic of this unit is volunteering and charity, which is closely related to
students’ daily life. And this lesson is the fourth period of the unit, so students have learned some vocabulary about volunteering already.
◆Analysis of students
Students in Grade 8 are quite curious as they are in their early teens. So it is the crucial period to develop their values. Helping them to be kind and warm-hearted is quite necessary.
Ⅱ.Teaching aims ◆knowledge aims
1. Be able to listen , pronounce, read and spell the key words,
letter,disabled, blind, deaf, imagine, difficulty, carry, train, excited, kindness, clever, understand, change, set up, make a difference
2. Understand the target language and try to use them.
(1).I’d like to thank you for giving money to animal helpers. (2).Lucky makes a big difference to my life. (3).What would it be like to be blind and deaf? (4).I was excited about the idea of having a dog.
(5).You helped to make it possible for me to have lucky. ◆Ability aims
1. Understand the words according the part of speech of them.
2. Be able to predict the main idea of the passage according to the giving information.
3. Be able to get the useful information according to the questions,
4. Be able to talk about their experiences of helping other people and call on people to be volunteers with the expressions in this unit.
◆Emotion aims
Volunteering is a symbol of the local culture of Pingxiang, and it may have a great influence on students’ daily life. Students will learn to care more about others and feel proud of being a member of Pingxiang.
Ⅲ.Teaching key points and difficult points ◆Key points
1. Improve students’ reading skills like skimming and scanning.
2. Students will be able to get the useful information through reading. ◆. Difficult points
1. Learn the part of speech of the words in 2c and use them properly.
2. Understand the passage in detail and use the expressions to write a proposal. Ⅳ.Teaching methods and teaching aids ◆Teaching methods:

Pictures, heart-shaped cards, the map of Pingxiang and PPT. Ⅴ.Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warm up and lead in
At the very beginning, I will show pictures and have students guess the place that I visited on May Day to get their attention easily.
Just then I will show students a map of Pingxiang, and divided all the students into four groups: East, West, South and North to represent the four directions of
Pingxiang. And ask students to work together to make our city full of love. The group that gets the most heart-shaped cards will be the winner. Competition will stimulate students to be more active in class.
Then I will say, as a member of Pingxiang, how much do you know about it ? I will show the pictures and ask:
(1). Where are the moral models from?
(2). Are there many volunteers in Pingxiang ?
The two questions will lead into the topic of this unit-- volunteering. Step 2 Pre-reading
At first I will let students watch a video about the volunteers in Pingxiang to help students learn more about the volunteers and their jobs.
Then I will ask students :
What do you think of them?
What other volunteer job do you know? To help students review the main phrases of Section A like give away.
When the students realize there are lots of volunteers in Pingxiang making our city cleaner and warmer. I will ask them whether a dog can be a volunteer, so as to present the main character of this lesson-Lucky.
To help students learn more about a guide dog, I will have them to watch a video about a guide dog .After watching, they need to answer:
(1)Can the guide dog understand his owner’s orders? (2)Do you need a guide dog? Why?
And I will guide students to answer No, because we can do the normal things ourselves.
To help students understand new words normal things I will show pictures and have students answer the following questions.
Can you open the door? Can you close the door? Can you answer the phone? Can you carry things?
Can you use your hands or arms easily? In this way, students can also learn the expressions like carry things, answer the phone .
After that ,I will say we can do the normal things like opening and closing the door, answering the phone, carrying things and using the arms and legs easily. but these things may be quite difficult for some people.
While helping students learn the key words with the help of pictures I will also draw their attention to the part of speech of the words, through choosing the correct translation.

when students learn that lots of people are in need ,I will say to help the disabled people out we set up some groups like Animal helpers. and there are lots of special trained animals. then I will show some pictures and learn phrases a special trained dog, get things ,understand different orders and make a difference ect.at the same time students will also learn the part of speech of these words. At last,Iwill say animals and people are good friends, and they are also our great helpers to lead into the reading naturally.
Step 3 While-reading
1. Before the students read the passage , let them watch and find out it is a
thank-you letter, and the letter is from Ben Smith to Miss Li. That is to say Ben Smith thanks Miss Li.
2.A guessing game
Guess who are they ? to make students be well prepared for the reading.
3.Ask students to read the passage quickly and describe the characters with the adjectives.
Then we will come to Careful reading to learn the passage in detail.
1. Read the first paragraph and answer (1)Why do you think Miss Li is kind? She ____________to “Animal Helpers”. (2) What did she do?
After that guide students pay attention to the word “it ”in the sentence You helped to make it possible for me to have lucky. In this way students can understand the infinitives in the real situations.
2. Read the second paragraph and answer the following questions (a)Ben is disabled. What’s the matter with him ? He can’t …
He has difficulty in …
(b)Does Ben love animals? How did he feel about the idea of having a dog?
3.Read the third and fourth paragraphs and answer Lucky is clever and fantastic . What can he do?
Then teacher conclude that Lucky has changed Ben’s life.
Step 4 Post-reading 1. Summary
Students work in groups, discuss with each other ,then, summarize with the information of the passage.
2. Listen and circle “to”
Listen to the tape and circle the “to” in the passage to pay attention to the use of the infinitives. and they finish the exercises, they will understand the difficult sentence better.
3. Group work
Pingxiang is creating the civilized city so every one of us should work together to make our city more beautiful. Let students talk about the following questions with other group members.
(1)1.Who needs your help? Why?
(2)2.What are you good at? What you can do?
(3)3.Did you do anything helpful for others before?\What was it ? (4)4.How did you feel?
(5)5.What is your advice for others?
To help them do it more purposefully. I will show them an example of mine. and guide them to answer the questions with the giving sentence structures.
4. After the discussion students will be able to write a proposal to ask people to be kind and warm-hearted.
Step 5 Homework
Do a survey about the disabled people in our city to make students learn more about their difficulties and cherish their own life. Then, write a proposal to call on the students in your school to help the disabled people around us to use the expressions that have been learned in this unit.
