Ⅰ. Lead-in
1. A question: What’s good manners? Show some adjectives.
2.Discussion:Do you think it’s polite to give your seat to the old on the bus? Show a picture of giving a seat to the old man. 3. Multiple choices:
[Purpose: Arouse students’ interest in the topic—manners in the UK.]
Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension Pre-reading
1.Look at pictures: Good manners & Bad manners. Present some new phrases:
shake one’s hands, queue, keep your voice down, bump into someone, push in before others, in one’s way.
[Purpose: Make sure students have understood some key phrases of the interview. And teach some new phrases.] 2. Watch a video: When in Rome
A question: What is the famous English saying in this conversation?
[Purpose: Arouse students’ interest in the interview. And lead students to predict the
content of the interview.]
While-reading
Step 1 Fast reading.
1. Read line1-6 and answer questions: What is the proper way to greet people in the UK? Why do they greet with a kiss?
[Purpose: Lead students to know the proper way to greet people and improve the ability of getting key phrases from the first part.] 2. Read line7-9 and fill in the blanks.
[Purpose: Improve students’ ability of scanning an interview to get information.] 3. Read line10-22 and finish the table.
[Purpose: Lead students to know what people should and shouldn’t do in public and at home.]
Step 2 Play a game Stand up or sit down.
Show phrases about good/bad manners on the screen. Stand up if it is good. Sit down if it is bad.
[Purpose: Help students understand and remember the key phrases in the interview.]
Post-reading
Step 1. Watch a video on good and manners at school. [Arouse students’ interest in the discussion.]
Step 2. Discuss good manners at school and write down as many as you can. Present your work to other groups
[Purpose: Arouse students’ interest in speaking English and create situations to use words and phrases.]
Step 3. Tips for good manners at school.
[Help students realize how important it is to respect others.]
Ⅲ. Homework
1. Use what you’ve learned, write and practise speaking a conversation with your partner.
2. Look for information about manners in different countries.
