Period 1 reading and thinking-- Reaching out across
the Sea
Teaching Objectives:
1. Help students to learn to identify essay types
2. Guide students to collect facts about China’s sea exploration in
different time periods and help them to learn to express opinions
3. Enable students to understand the significance of China’s sea
exploration, especially the Belt and Road Initiative
Teaching methods
1. While leading in the teacher can ask students questions to help
them get to know the topic of this unit.
2. During Pre-reading the teacher can use the world map to help
students better understand the importance of the oceans and
encourage students to introduce a great sea voyage in history. This
activity should be student-centered and arouse students’ interest in
the topic and activate students’ background information.
3. While Reading, the teacher should tailor the activities to students’
needs and firstly ask the students to understand their task. With the
task in their mind, they can find answers quickly.
4. During Post-reading, the teacher should offer proper guide to help
students better aware of the facts and opinions and encourage
students to voice their opinions based on facts. Also, group work is
encouraged.
Teaching difficulties and pointsꢀꢀꢀ
1. To enable the students to sum up main ideas and to develop their

reading ability.
2. To enable the students to identify essay types.
3. To enable the students to talk about the significance of the Belt and
Road Initiative.
Teaching procedures
Pre-reading
T: 1.Why do people explore the sea?
2. Do you know any famous sea voyages in history? Make a brief
introduction about the leading person and their achievements.
hile-reading
T: 1.What does the title mean?
2.How many paragraphs are there in the passage?
Activity 1: read for main idea and structure
T: 1.Read Para.1 : a.Why did mankind reach out across the sea?
b. What will the following paragraphs be about? (how
do you know? What does the east refer to?)
c. What is the function of Para.1?
2.Read the following paragraphs and find out the main idea of each
paragraph.
3.How is the passage developed?

Activity 2: identify essay type
T: What kind of essay does this passage belong to?
Activity 3: scan for correct names
T: 1. What are the key words?
2.What are the correct names?
Activity 4: read to collect facts
T: 1.What other information or facts about the sails are included?
2.Read and find out the purpose, regions, and influence of each sail.

Post-reading
Activity 5: learn to express opinions
T: 1.Look at the regions of China’s sails in different time periods, what
can you see? Why?
2.Look at the purpose and influence parts and answer these two
questions:
a. Why do you think China reach out across the sea?
b. What do you think is the significance of reaching out across the
sea?
Activity 6: discuss & report
T: Suppose you are invited to an international youth forum, work in a
group to report the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative to
foreign students. You should use the facts from the passage to support
your opinion. (Useful structures have been offered to students.)

Assignment
T: Surf the Internet to find out more facts about the Belt and Road
Initiative to support your opinion.
