一、Analysis of the Teaching Material
Unit 4 is aiming at talking about Cyberspace, which greatly arouses students’ learning interest. Lesson 4, the fourth period of this unit, which lays stress on the drills of a reading strategy, is a reading lesson. The content of the lesson is mainly about virtual tourism and the introduction of a city, which help readers to understand and sense the beauty of the city of Auckland in New Zealand. So far students have learned something about the Internet, websites and virtual reality in the first three lessons, which has laid a good foundation for the reading and the language output in this lesson.
However, how to combine the reading material with information technology appropriately is a thought-provoking question. In order to help students have a deep appreciation of the beauty of the city and have a better understanding of the reading material which is much related to their geographic knowledge, teacher will apply information technologies to teaching such as maps, pictures made by Photoshop, audios and videos synthesized by CorePlayer, etc. It will, in a way, help to enhance students’ reading ability and strengthen the connection among various subjects. Besides, teacher will invite students to have a video chat with a local in New Zealand.
二、Analysis of the Students
With the growing popularity of VR device, students is becoming increasingly interested in the virtual world. As senior 1 students, they have achieved a certain level of vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Thus it is not difficult for them to get a general idea of the reading material. However, due to the lack of the geographic knowledge and cultural background of Auckland, teacher finds it a necessary for students to learn something more beyond the material, which, to some extent, will arouse students’ learning interest in English and improve their reading ability of understanding this reading material .

1. Knowledge aims:
(1) To grasp the new words and expressions concerning tourism in this lesson: tourism; guide; seaside; settle; central; suburb; volcano; harbor; sunshine; surfing; have a population of; be located on; go back; be known as.
(2) To get some information about the city of Auckland.
(3) To know more about the geographic knowledge of Auckland and New Zealand.
2. Ability aims:
(1) To improve reading ability of matching topics/paragraphs and getting detailed information by scanning and skimming.
(2) To practice speaking ability of introducing a city through group work.
3. Moral aims:
(1) To develop multicultural awareness and improve their multicultural communication abilities.
(2) To cultivate the ability of appreciating the beauty of nature.

Step 1 Lead-in
Invite students to enjoy a video and share something about the video:
country; geographic knowledge; scenery; history; weather; people; entertainments.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Invite students to have a face chat with a local in New Zealand.
Then, invite students to introduce the country based on the local’s description.
Step 3 While-reading
1. Fast reading
Task 1: Invite students to read the text quickly to match the topics a-f with the five paragraphs in the text. There is one extra topic.
a) the history of the city
b) travel links
c) things to see in Auckland
d) night-life in Auckland
e) for water lovers
f) New Zealand’s largest city
2. Careful reading
Task 2: Read the passage for the second time and figure out whether the
following statements are True or False.
Before reading, invite students to read through the statements quickly and find out the key words in each statement.
1. Auckland is the capital of New Zealand.
2. Auckland is located on South Island.
3. Sky Tower is Auckland’s tallest Tower.
4. Maoris were the first people of New Zealand .
5. The climate in Auckland is wet and rainy.
6. Auckland is the paradise(天堂) for water lovers.

Task 5: Introduce a city(Work in groups)
Draw students’ attention to the following table and compare the city of Auckland with Hefei. Work in groups. Act as a guide and introduce Hefei to your foreign friends.

九、Teaching reflection
This lesson was well-organized with all the activities carried out around the topic of Virtual Tourism. Teacher applied various information technologies such as picutures, audios and videos, etc, which greatly aroused students’ learning interest and helped students to obtain the knowledge in a visual and vivid way. Most of the students took part in the class activities actively. However, teacher should , in the future, pay more attention to the students who are shy and dare not to show themselves in public. In addition, teacher should learn more about the latest information technologies in order to have students obtain knowledge effectively.
