Teaching Procedures Step 1 Greeting
Greet the students as usual. Step 2 Revision and lead-in T: do you like Englsih? Ss: Yes, of course. T: Are you good at it ? Ss: No. I really hope so!
T: why does Englsih so difficult for our Chinese students? Maybe it is the grammar and vocabulary that are most difficult for us. But after this class you will find out English is actually not as difficult as we had thought before. Trust me!
T: English is widely used around the world ,there are over 90 countries speaking English as their official language or semi-official language .
(show them a world map and find out which countries speak Englsih as their native language ) T: Well, as we know, there is more than one kind of English in the word. They are different from one another in some ways.
(show them the differences between British English and American English)
T: though native speakers may use different English but they have no difficulty in understanding each other.
T:Why has English changed over time? What will world English be in the future? Do you know?

Well, today, the passage “The Road To Modern English”will tell us. Now please open your books and turn to page 9. First of all ,please guess the meaning of road,who can tell me? S: road means development or history.
T: excellent, the title means the history or the development of englsih, this article will be written in time order, when you read the passage, pay more attention to the time! Step 3 Fast reading and comprehending
T: Now read the passage and listen to the tape.Try to find the topic sentences in five minutes. (After a while.) T: Paragraph 1
T: Can you find a topic sentence in Paragraph 1.
Ss: Today, more people speak English as their first , second or foreign language than ever before. T: Can you find the words indicating the times? Read them out. Ss: “ At the end of , in the next century, today.” T: Let’s go on to the next paragraph. Paragraph 2
T: which is the key sentence?
S3: The first sentence. “ Native English speakers can understand each other even if they don’t speak the same kind of English.”

Ss:All languages change when cultures communicate with one another.
T: do you know the reason why languages change? Just think about it carefully.According to the passage, languages change when cultures communicate with one another. So the writer intended to predict a possible road to modern English, that is, when Chinese culture communicates with English culture, English may change, too. So as time goes by, Chinese English may become one of the world English. That is what the writer intended to tell us about this passage. So the writer gave it the title-The Road to Modern English. T: why did the writer decide to end the passage with a question? According to the passage, languages change when culturescommunicate with one another. So as time goes by, Chinese English may become one of the world English. That is what the writer intended to tell us about in this passage.
